Using your e-Cigarette

Your e-cigarette only works when you press the battery button. Press the battery button and inhale. Release the button after inhaling. Make sure that you press the battery button before you inhale. If you inhale without pressing the battery button you could end up with a mouthful of liquid (icky! . . . it has something to do with equalising pressures . . .) And make sure that you hold down the battery button until you have finished inhaling (same possible result as above).
If the heating plate in the top of the battery becomes dry, it will produce a burnt taste, commonly known as a 'dry hit'. Ensure there is enough liquid in the clearomiser to prevent the coil from drying out Best practice is to make sure that the bottom of the coil is always covered with liquid. The itsy bitsy wicks hide underneath the silicone cap which sits over the coil post and so long as they stay wet, you'll have no dry hits and no burnt flavours to ruin your vape..
When you press the battery button, the LED light in the button will turn on and will stay on until you release the button. Holding the battery button down for too long may cause overheating and potentially damage the clearomiser, the coil and / or the battery.. Your battery will tell you if it's unhappy by flashing the LED light in the battery button. If it does overheat, wait until it returns to normal temperature before using again.

The Newbie Vaper : Sciencey Stuff About Vaping and Technique
[or How to Vape Like A Pro Without Looking Like A Dick]
We mentioned on The Set Up page that there's actually a bit of real science attached to the technique used for vaping as opposed to how you smoke a traditional cigarette. This is something I only read recently, although instinctively, I think all vapers work it out for themselves after that first draw and the coughing attack that usually follows . . . and yes, this is perfectly normal and something you just don't know about when you're a newbie, unless someone clues you in . . . I wasn't lucky enough to have someone clue me in . . . bummer
So, here's the thing . . . you just can't go about vaping exactly the same way as you would if you were smoking a cigarette.
"Why?" I hear you ask . . . well, it's a couple of things :
In vaping's earliest stages, current smokers were targeted and in the hope of a solution to their various quitting dilemmas, many people switched to vaping, only to discover it wasn't at all what they were expecting . . . it was a totally different deal. The concept was sound, but the delivery system [water vapour] was a lot slower to bring the nicotine to the brain in comparison to the quick, hard draws taken on a cigarette,
So, here's the thing . . . you just can't go about vaping exactly the same way as you would if you were smoking a cigarette.
"Why?" I hear you ask . . . well, it's a couple of things :
- cigarette smoke is made up of burning tobacco [plus all those tasty chemicals . . . and carbon . . . from the burning tobacco] : vaping is basically water based. The nicotine is carried in the smoke of a cigarette but in liquids, it's the water vapour which carries the nicotine
- smoke is 1 micron in size : vapor is 10 microns. Smoke therefore can penetrate a lot deeper into your lungs and airways

How To Vape Like A Pro Without Looking Like A Dick
The whole key to looking like a pro and not the alternative is to slow down . . . slow way down.
Here's a run down on the basic steps :
|
Pretty simply stuff, nothing complicated but keep in mind if you want to look like a pro from your very first draw on your e-cig, it's important that you slow down and be gentle : draw lightly on your e-cig and savour the flavour.
Want To Look Like A Dick When You're Vaping For The First Time? Here's How . . .
The Other Side of the Newbie Vaper Story
There's two sides to every story so we can't just give one version, now can we? If you're a newbie, you want to enjoy your first vaping experience; we want that for you too and besides, it would be rude of us to only tell you how not to make a dick of yourself.
So . . . ready to take notes?
And always try to keep a spare coil or two on hand because sure as God made little green apples, the last one you have [the one in your clearomiser right now] will drop dead on you when you really don't need it to and don't have the time to do anything about it . . . you know what I mean . . . the special anniversary dinner you're about to go to with the significant other when your e-cig coil unceremoniously snuffs it, leaving a 'do not resuscitate' message . . . .it's 7 PM on a Friday night and there's no retailer open until the morning . . . on-line shopping won't get to you until next week at the earliest . . . aaarrrrrrggggghhhhh!
A spare coil or two could just save you going out and buying a packet of cigarettes 'just to tide you over' or committing some heinous crime to get your hands on a new coil now. Adopt the old boy scout attitude about it and 'Always Be Prepared'.
So . . . ready to take notes?
- Don't go out and buy the biggest, meanest looking MOD you can find because your mate says it's the greatest thing in the World, especially if your mate's a pro vaper. Start with a mid-range, good quality kit that has a bottom coil clearomiser [preferably with replaceable coils] and a variable voltage battery [funnily enough, just like the ones in our shop . . . just sayin'] If you try to vape one of those MOD monsters like a cigarette as your first vaping experience, you'll most likely hate it [or come damn close to coughing up a lung . . . ]
- Don't draw too hard or sharply on your e-cig . . . you risk getting a mouthful of liquid if the coil hasn't had long enough to heat up properly or sucking too hard will bring liquid up through the air tube, straight into your mouth. Remember, slow and gentle
- Don't try to draw the vapor directly into your lungs the very first time [cough, choke, hack and cough some more]. Get a feel for the vapor first, then test the theory on direct lung vaping
- Don't compare vaping to smoking . . . especially if you're hanging with pro vapers
- If you're not overly enthused with the first few test runs, it may be one of a few things :
- you may have crappy e-liquids, a crappy clearomiser or your whole e-cig may be crap [sorry to be blunt, but I know you didn't get them from us if they're crap and we're obliged to give you all of the possibilities which may contribute to a bad start to vaping for you]
- you may be drawing too hard or too fast . . . I know I've mentioned this before . . . slow and gentle
- you may need to adjust your battery power [voltage] so that it reaches atomising temperature faster : increase the voltage setting on your variable volt battery to heat the coil faster - crank the volts up a bit [check the chart below for suggested coil resistance vs voltage settings]
- if you feel or taste a burnt flavour in your mouth or throat, your clearomiser coil could be dying or you have the power [voltage] set too high for that particular ohm coil or liquid. Check the chart below to note if your voltage setting falls within the suggested range for the coil you're using [what ohms rating is the coil?] And from the liquid perspective, the lighter coloured liquids tend to deal with higher power levels far better than the darker coloured liquids which can tend to burn quickly at higher power levels. Each liquid has it's own 'personality' and will respond differently to a variety of settings of both power and ohms combinations. Aside from the increased vapour production to be had, there are also subtle flavour variations bought out in each liquid as you change the voltage settings on your battery or resistance of the coil in your clearomiser. Half the fun is finding your own personal 'sweet spot' for your favourite liquids

Here's a handy little guide to setting up your e-cig with a variety of coil resistance ratings [Ohm ratings] and their associated suggested voltage [power] settings for your variable volt battery.
Using these settings as a guide should help you to avoid the burnt taste and burning out coils at a rapid rate. Keep in mind though that each liquid has it's own 'personality' which you need to take into account when choosing the coil and voltage settings for your e-cig. This guide refers mainly to single and dual coils, not so much sub ohm coils. |
